Irene Winsor Shaffner

Irene Winsor Shaffner 1913 - 2008 Irene Winsor Shaffner"Bennie" of Halifax, formerly of Bridgewater NS passed away December 12, 2008 at the Northwood Center. Born in Bonavista NL, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Bennett and Anne Nora Alvina Bennett, nee Winsor. Mom loved life - a gift that challenged her parents during her formative years - she was always looking for adventure - a trait she passed on to her children. A registered nurse by profession, mom took her training at the Infirmary in Halifax. Mom took specialized training at the John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD, the Montreal General and at the Children's hospital in Halifax. Her passion was OR nursing. Above all, mom was a mother there was nothing that she did not encourage her children to attempt if they so desired. Her children were her life and her happiest moments were when she had them around her. Mom loved activity and being with people. She spent many happy years as an active member of the Bridgewater Curling Club - taking part in the on-ice activities as well as the social functions. Mom took a keen interest in the Bridgewater Home and School Association. After the children left home, she and Bill would travel south to Florida where they spent many winters with friends visiting flea markets, playing cards and entertaining grandchildren when they visited. Having grown up by the water in Newfoundland, she especially enjoyed her summers at the family cottage in Green Bay NS. No matter where she lived, when visiting her one could always count on her for a friendly smile, a one liner, or some tidbit that left you smiling. Even to the end of her 95 years, she never lost her sense of humour and adventure. Irene is survived by one daughter, Linda Shaffner of Halifax, two sons, Dr. Jim Shaffner(Carol) of Port Elgin NB, and Dr. Vernon Shaffner(Dianne) of Halifax, three grandchildren Jeniffer (David) Hilling, Jonathan (Kelly), and Matthew (Melanie), six great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
