89, Sydney It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Alexander 'Sandy' Matheson on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Big Harbour, he was the son of the late Alexander and Mable (Parsons) Matheson. He was a member of the Merchant Marine during the Second World War and an active member of the Whitney Pier legion. Sandy was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier. He was employed as a pipefitter for many years with several different companies until his retirement. Sandy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his three children, Brenda (David) Sawler, Sydney, Henry (Lauranne) Matheson, Ottawa, Sandy Matheson, Sydney; his precious grandchildren, Stephanie, Amy, Laura, Dylan and Nan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary (Kennedy), sister, Josephine, brothers, Henry, Murdock, Robert, Murray, Jess, Donald, Alfred and Lloyd. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 21 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 at the funeral home chapel with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Loaves and Fishes, Charlotte Street, Sydney, N.S., or your local food bank.
