Margaret Mary Melanson (nee Boyle)

Margaret Mary Melanson (nee Boyle) 1918 - 2009 Peacefully, with her three daughters by her side, Margaret (Peggy) passed away at the Montreal General Hospital on January 8. Born in the beautiful seaside resort town of Narin-Portnoo, County Donegal, Ireland, she was brought up the daughter of the Squire. She worked for many years in London, surviving the Blitz and, on the day the war ended, met her one true love, Olivier (Mel) Melanson, an Acadian Canadian serving in London with the Royal Canadian Air Force. She immigrated to Canada in 1947 to marry Olivier in Haute Aboujagane, N B. His military career resulted in her beginning married life in the Yukon, experiencing Canadian winter for the first time and having her own dog-sled team. Her husband's military career would result in postings to Germany, France and many Canadian provinces. A world traveler, she frequented the museums and art galleries in her travels. A music lover with a beautiful, pure singing voice, she was invited to be soloist at countless weddings in Ireland, England and Canada. She was church organist, helping to lead choirs and assisting with the children's choirs of which her daughters were members. After his 30-year military career, Olivier (Mel) became a hotel manager and their life together continued as he managed properties in Edmundston, Fredericton and Moncton, NB; Bridgewater NS; Ste-Foy QC and Winnipeg MB. An avid reader, mostly of history and biographies, she kept up on world affairs and current issues. Very politically minded, she was always ready for a spirited discussion, never shy about expressing her opinions. A proud Canadian citizen, she felt very privileged to have been invited to sit at Sir Wilfred Laurier's desk in the Prime Minister's Office on a recent visit to Ottawa. She loved fashion, and in later years took a liking to wearing gold shoes, which became her trademark along with her signature perfume Nina Ricci. Predeceased by her husband Olivier (Mel), brothers John, Josie, Bernard (Ireland), Bill (Kamloops BC), sisters Kathleen and Bridie (Ireland). Survived by one sister Eileen (Martin), London UK, daughters Allanna (Bruce Parent) and Giselle of Montreal and Nuala (Neil Mattson) of Moncton NB. She was the Matriarch of the Boyle family, with countless nieces, nephews and their families in Canada, Ireland and England who will always remember their beloved "Auntie Peg". Her daughters would like to express their gratitude to all of the team members of the Palliative Care Unit of the Montreal General Hospital for their compassion and kindness. A Memorial Mass was held in Montreal on January 16. Funeral and burial will be scheduled at a later date in Haute Aboujagane, NB. As Margaret wished, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, Montreal General Hospital, 1650 Cedar, Montreal, PQ, H3G 1A4. Margaret (Peggy) will be forever loved and forever remembered.
