Charles L. McEwen

Charles L. McEwen Charles L. McEwen, 92, of Moncton, with his loving family at his side, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Born in Eel River, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Jennie (Dobson) McEwen. Charlie moved from Eel River to Dorchester with his family at the age of five, attended school there and worked on his father's farm. He became interested in airplanes at a young age and had the desire to design, build and fly airplanes. After moving to Moncton in his early 20's to become a well known entrepreneur in both the construction industry and aviation industry, operating McEwen Construction and Airfield Ltd. and was the original founder and builder of McEwen Airfield on Elmwood Drive. Charlie was a long time director of the Moncton Flying Club; ran the Moncton Mosquito Control Organization for many years; worked with Targetair Ltd., designing and building a target drone launcher system for the Department of National Defence; was a member of the Purple Martin Society, Ducks Unlimited, etc.; was also active in developing solar system heating systems and thermal wall efficient homes and was a member of the Moncton Wesleyan Church. Up to his final days, Charlie kept busy designing new items of various uniqueness. His ability to take on difficult projects will be much missed in his passing. Charlie will be sadly missed by his wife, Constance "Connie" (Nickerson) (Hicks) McEwen; daughter, Jennie Cassidy (Norman), Florida; son, David (Joy), Moncton; 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; stepchildren, Scott Hicks, Shawn Hicks, Sally Floyd; four step grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Cecelia (Davidson) (1979); sons, Frederick, Charles Joseph; daughter, Carole; brother, William (Bill). Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service, Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel, Friday, May 22, 2009, 10:30 am, Pastor Paul Fosmark officiating. Reception following the service. Interment, Dorchester Rural Cemetery.
