CAROL ANN GASKIN BAKER

BAKER, CAROL ANN GASKIN - September 27, 1940 - August 9, 2009 - Carol, one of Canada's best known travel writers, died peacefully at home in Vancouver, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, to Harold Gaskin and Ida Steeves Gaskin, her life was one of colourful adventure. Carol attended Moncton High School, UBBTS, Mount Allison University, and Provincial Normal School in order. She and now deceased former husband, John Baker, launched their travel writing careers from Spain, a country that - especially the island of Mallorca - remained dear to Carol's heart. She Married futurist Frank (Dr. Tomorrow) Ogden in 1988. Frank survives her, as do brothers Reg, Dale, Alfred, and Wayne Gaskin, and her sister-in-law and dear companion Lynn (Baker) Dorling and Family. Carol's travels took her to 126 countries around the world, and experiences which lent a depth of quality to her additional pursuits as teacher, author, artist, script writer, and actor. Carol didn't settle for the mediocre, nor was she patient with bureaucracy. Faced with any difficulty, her motto was "ya tenemos el no, buscamos el si." (We have the no, we're looking for the yes.) In a world of bland adherence to the conventional, Carol was a beacon of individuality and nonconformity. Those who knew her will miss her dreadfully, but can only be thankful that she is now free of pain. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
