With great sadness, we announce the passing of Nick Oldale at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on March 3, 2010.
Nick, son of the late Harry and Evelyn Oldale, was born in Liverpool, N.S., May 16, 1936.
Nick is survived by his loving wife, Lorna (McIsaac); sons, Scott (Elaine) and Steven (Tracy), both of Calgary; daughter, Jan (Terry) MacGillivary, of Sydney River; his brother, Philip (Joyce) and sister, Carolyn; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ritcey and brother-in-law, John McIsaac and their respective families. Papa Nick experienced great pride and joy in the athletic, musical and academic accomplishments of his eight very special grandchildren, Katelyn, Benjamin, Jackson, Bradley, Christian, Rylea, Carter and Nicholas.
Nick graduated from Acadia University receiving BSc (1958) and MSc (1959) degrees in geology. While at Acadia, he was a member of the varsity hockey, football and rugby teams. He started his career in Schefferville, Quebec as a mining geologist with the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). In 1965, his family moved to Sydney River. He began his teaching career as an instructor at the Eastern Nova Scotia Institute of Technology and retired in 1993 as a professor in the Science and Mineral Technology Departments of the University College of Cape Breton (Cape Breton University). He was involved with several mining industry associations and activities. He was a former president of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia and has received several citations for his contributions to the organization. He acted as a divisional director of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIMM) and was chairman of its annual general meeting in Halifax 1995. He was also a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (APENS). His community spirit was evident as a member of the Sydney Rotary Club where he served as president and director and was named a Paul Harris Fellow for his dedication and contribution. Nick was an adherent of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River where he served on several committees. Nick was an avid sportsman within the community. While a member of the Sydney Curling Club, he participated in many local and provincial bonspiels and with his wife, represented Nova Scotia at the Canadian Mixed Championship in 1971. He spent many years as an organizer and leader with the local Dorados Swim Club and was actively involved with the Nova Scotia Swimming Association. He was an active and proud member of the Sydney Combine Oldtimers Hockey team and a keen skater with the local adult skating group.
Nick’s special ‘piece of heaven’ was his summer home on the Bras d’Or Lakes known affectionately as “Benocoâ€. Here, summer after summer, he watched his grandchildren grow from infancy. He was a man of nature enjoying all its beauty and serenity and it was at Benoco where he enjoyed nature’s offerings from the land and sea. Respectfully known as “the gathererâ€, he gathered fish from the lakes, vegetables from his gardens, fruit from his orchards, fiddleheads from the woods and berries and mushrooms from the fields. His great pleasure was preparing gourmet meals of seafood and fresh vegetables for family and friends. The varied activities of Benoco were special for him and these special activities will be remembered and cherished dearly by his family.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff of the Palliative Care and Cancer Centres of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their excellent care and compassion during Nick’s illness. The family would also like to extend a personal thank you to Dr. Murdock Smith.
Memorial donations can be made to the Palliative Care Center or the Cancer Center of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Visitation will take place at the Sydney Memorial Chapel at 49 Welton St., Sydney on Sunday, March 7, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Monday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River, 1524 Kings Rd., Sydney, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating.
