It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and companion, James Joseph Devoe, 84, a resident of King Street, Florence, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Jeremiah and Ellen (Diggins) Devoe.
James was a decorated veteran, serving overseas in the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 83, Florence. He was an avid painter and ship modeler.
He was predeceased by his wife, Victoria (MacKinnon), his son, Anthony, his grandson, David Puppetz and his brothers, Peter, Thomas, Edward, Gerald and Patrick.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Eileen Gracie, his sons, Thomas, Alberta, Charles (Donna), Alberta, Roddie, North Sydney, Joseph (Lorna), Florence, and James (Julie), Sydney Mines; his daughters, Pat, Sydney, Mary Ellen, Los Angeles, Barbara, Debbie, British Columbia, Faith, Dartmouth, Theresa, Florence, and Patricia, Halifax; his sisters, Marie Glen and Nellie Day. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He will be sadly missed for his sense of humour by all who knew him.
Visitation Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen’s Church, Florence with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Burial in St. Stephen’s Cemetery at a later date.
