It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Mary Burns (Stevenson) Sturgess at the MacGillivray Guest Home.
Born and raised in Glace Bay, Mary was the daughter of the late James and Alexis (Burns) Stevenson.
She is survived by her husband, David; aunt and uncle, Jean and William Miller, aunt, Alma Simm and uncle, James Burns. She is also survived by her nieces, Heather (Stevenson) MacDonald, Janice (Stevenson) Donovan, Nancy (Gillis) Crone and Sharon (Gillis) Kenney.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her brothers, Oliver and Donald and sister, Catherine.
Mary was a school teacher for 35 years, teaching in Glace Bay, Mira Ferry, Birch Grove, the Radar Base and the Sydney River area. Mary was active in her church, serving on several boards over the years, as well as singing in the Riverfolk choir. She was also a member of the Cove Ladies Auxiliary. Her greatest love was her piano and after she retired, she enjoyed playing music with various bands as they entertained at local nursing homes and other facilities. Mary also enjoyed skating and was active at the Coxheath Rink and at the College, until her health failed.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Saturday 2 p.m. with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery at a later date. Following the service, a reception will take place in MacLeod Hall.
Mary’s husband, David and the family would like to thank all the staff, especially the personal care workers, the nurses and Dr. John Archibald for the excellent care Mary received during her two years at MacGillivray’s.
