CAINES, Derrick– 48 formerly of St. John’s. We the family, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear brother Derrick on March 15, 2010, at his residence, Princess Court Nursing Home, Dryden, Ontario.
Predeceased by parents Ted and Ella Caines and brother-in-law Eric Burt. Leaving to mourn, his guardians, brother Edgar Bruce and wife Estelle of Dryden, ON; sister Marilyn Burt also of Dryden, ON; nephews Clifford of Toronto, ON and Rod of Gloverton, NFLD.
He leaves behind a large circle of cousins from the Caines and Reid families. Dear friends and staff of the Perlin Center where he spent many happy years; the Connors family, especially Judy, all of St. John’s.
Derrick moved to Red Lake, ON in 1990 to live with Edgar, Estelle and son Clifford. There he flourished and reached his highest potential, working, gaining independence, enjoying sports and his music. He was a bowler and member of the Special Olympics bowling team in Dryden for many years. He leaves many friends in the Red Lake and Dryden area.
He never forgot his Newfoundland roots and was always pleased to sing “The Mummers Song” and Joey’s “Like You Would.” He would set up his karaoke machine for his friends and say “Paul Raynes. VOCM cares,” Paul being his favorite D.J.
Born with Down Syndrome he lived a good life despite the challenges. In 2006 Alzheimer’s set in and quickly progressed. In fall of 2009 he suffered a grand mal seizure and was moved to the nursing home.
He will be forever loved and missed by his family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dryden Community Funeral Home, Dryden, ON. Memorial service of remembrance held Friday March 19th, 2010, followed by cremation at a later date. Derrick will be brought home to his final resting place to be with his mother at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, St. John’s, NFLD.
