Jean Kerr (MacLeod) Proudfoot
NEW GLASGOW - Jean Kerr (MacLeod) Proudfoot, wife of James E. Proudfoot, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2010.
Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on February 24, 1927, she was a daughter of the late James D. MacLeod and Alexandra (MacKenzie) MacLeod.
After graduation from New Glasgow High School she attended the School of Nursing at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, becoming a Registered Nurse.
Jean and Jim, the love of her life, were married on June 3, 1950, and they settled down on the west side of New Glasgow to raise a family. Mom was devoted to her family, both immediate and extended, and was not content unless she was helping someone in need. Whether in her professional role in the early days on the road as a V.O.N. nurse, or later with family and friends, Mom's "hobby" was assisting people who she knew could use some help.
This extended to her role in community organizations and she devoted her time to the Ladies Guild and the Ladies Aid at The Kirk Church in New Glasgow, and for over 20 years was a very dedicated worker for the Canadian Cancer Society in Pictou County.
While her family was growing up Mom was very active in the Westside Community Centre and helping out in any organization where "the kids" were involved. She was a Kinette for many years and was the last surviving Charter Member of the Kinette Club of New Glasgow.
Jean was an avid long-time curler and golfer and enjoyed many good times with friends at the Bluenose Curling Club and the Abercrombie Golf and Country Club. She loved summer weather at the beach or by the pool, as well as a good game of bridge.
Mom was particularly proud of her family, her children and grandchildren, enjoying every achievement, big or small. She had a very special and close relationship with her only daughter Heather. During Heather's illness, Mom devoted herself to her care and brightened each day for Heather with her positive attention and wonderful good humour.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her daughter, Heather Proudfoot Barry; her sister, Ruth (MacLeod) Fraser; and her brother, G.F. (Bud) MacLeod.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; sons: Jim (Janet); Kendall (Jenny); Frank (Tara); son-in-law, Art Barry; and grandchildren: Lindsay, Gillian, Jim, Joe, Michael, David, Emma, Ella; and sister, Isabel (MacLeod) (Joe) McLean.
Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H Porter Funeral Home in New Glasgow. Visitation at the funeral home Friday, April 2 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service will be at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church (The Kirk) in New Glasgow, Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Richard Sand presiding. Interment following at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in honour of Jean's many years of service.
