William Lemeul (Bill) Huestis, 92, passed away March 13, 2009, at the Camp Hill Veteran Memorial Hospital, Halifax.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Born Sept. 18, 1916, in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of Clifford Grant and Ethel (Matthews) Huestis.
He was a member of the Morrison Glace Bay High School rugby team as well as the Caledonia Intermediate rugby team. During the 1950s he was secretary of the Glace Bay minors hockey team. He loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. He was a member of Knox United Church in Glace Bay and a member of Glace Bay Legion Branch #3.
He was awarded the Queens Anniversary Medal and the Legion Meritorious Medal. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the RCAF 404 Buffalo Squadron, and completed two tours in the Shetland Islands. After the war he worked for the Caledonia Power Board as an electrician. In 1960, he accepted a position as provincial secretary treasurer, Nova Scotia Command Royal Canadian Legion in Halifax where he worked until he retired in 1977. He enjoyed watching the Parliamentary channel on television and loved to debate politics.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lily Broadbent, second wife, Mable Withrow, brothers, Roland and Gordon and sons, William Arthur and Kent.
He is survived by his children, Dawn Anne, Ruby (Ray) Tulley, Roger (Elaine), Carol (George) Cann, Barry (Linda), Terry (Helen); 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is March 17, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 18 11 a.m., Knox United Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Ralph Chapman officiating. Reception to follow in church hall. Burial will take place at a later date.
