BINKLEY - Doug Binkley aged 85 years of Shaunavon, SK, died on Monday, March 9, 2009, at the Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre following a lengthy illness. He was born at Shaunavon on April 5, 1923, and took all of his schooling at Shaunavon graduating from Grade XII in 1941. He immediately went into the R.C.A.F. for aircrew training. After receiving his wings in 1942 he was posted overseas and flew with the No. 6 Group R.C.A.F. Bomber Command until near the end of the war when he was invalided home. On returning to Canada he entered the University of Saskatchewan in the College of Pharmacy. He married Bernice Thompson while at University on June 12, 1948, and graduated in Pharmacy in 1950. After 6 months as a relief pharmacist at Macklin, he and Bernice moved to Climax and purchased the drugstore there. It was during their years in Climax that Vern and Jan were born. In 1964, his family moved to Shaunavon where he and Bernice operated Binkley’s Pharmacy until retiring on June 1, 1979. Doug was very fond of hunting, curling and golfing in his earlier years and during those years particularly enjoyed camping and traveling on family vacations. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was a Past Secretary of the Shaunavon Branch. He was also a Charter member of the Kiwanis Club and of the Masonic Lodge in which he was always very active for over fifty years, and in which he was a Past Master and District Deputy Grand Master of both local branches. He was also a member of the Shrine Club until health problems caused him to demit. He was predeceased by his mother Muriel in 1937; his father Glenn in 1973; his step-mother Rita in 1991; his sister Una in 1989; his brother Lawrence in 2005; his sister-in-law Edith in 2006; his father-in-law Alfred Thompson in 1978; and mother-in-law Myrtle Thompson in 2001. He is survived by his wife Bernice; his son Vern (Roxie) of Eastend and grandchildren Lindsay and David; his daughter Jan of Shaunavon; his brother-in-law Don McGarvie; as well as by three nieces and two nephews. Funeral services were held from Shaunavon Legion Hall on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. with Funeral Celebrant Bernadette Schneider officiating. Gary Houston presented the eulogy. Lorraine Oberle was the pianist and Janice Billington and Herb Conrad provided special music. Members of the Royal Canadian Legion attended and conducted the Legion Tribute. Masonic Rites were conducted by Maple Leaf Lodge #9 AF & AM. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at a later time in Veteran’s Memorial Gardens at Hillcrest Cemetery at Shaunavon.
