Corbett, Harold Lloyd - 82, Bass River, passed away March 17, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born January 19, 1927 in Bass River, he was a son of the late Charles and Mabel (Meadows) Corbett. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for a short period of time and later was employed as a driver for Acadian Lines. He then worked for the Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator and was a construction foreman, retiring after 35 years of service. During these later years, he enjoyed being a part time farmer raising his purebred Hereford cattle. He was a member of Riverside United Church, Bass River, a founding member of the Bass River and District Fire Brigade for 30 years where he served as the first Fire Chief. He was also a 60 year member of the I.O.O.F. Gladstone Lodge #80 of Bass River and later joined the Jurisdictional I.O.O.F. Harold enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping and was one of the few individuals in the province who made and repaired snowshoes. He also enjoyed a good game of cards with his family and friends. In his early youth, he enjoyed hockey and playing baseball and was a catcher with the Bass River “Rockets” and Londonderry “Ironclads” in 1949. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years , Jean (Knight); son, Stanley (Juanita); precious granddaughters, Jessica (Jeffrey) Wright, CFB, Borden, Ont., Danielle at home; special great-granddaughter, Maddison – four months; brother, Keith, Truro; sisters, Hilda MacKenzie, Truro; Iva Scott, Bass River; brother-in-law, Ross (Doris) Knight; sister-in-law, Joyce Knight. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 22 from 7-9 pm with an Oddfellows Tribute Service at 6:45 pm; funeral service on Monday March 23 at 2 pm, all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, with Rev. Bob Mack officiating. Spring interment in Riverside Cemetery, Bass River. Family flowers only.
