It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Alice MacNeil Rankin on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Carol was the daughter of Agnes MacNeil of Sydney, N.S. and the late Neil MacNeil.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Doug ‘Sonny’ Rankin; son, Ralph (Sandra) Matheson and daughter, Susanne (Charlie) Donovan; her mother, Mrs. Agnes MacNeil; four sisters, Bonnie (Kevin) Peck, Margaret (Roger) Koski, Sudbury, Ont., Elizabeth (George) Young, Angela (Jack) Calder; two brothers, Pierce (Patsy) MacNeil and Neil (Clare) MacNeil; stepchildren, Colin Rankin, John (Lori) Rankin, Cathy and Debra Rankin; 10 grandchildren, Andrew Matheson, Ottawa, Tyler MacAdam, Edmonton, Kristen MacAdam, Sheenagh and Ryanne Donovan, Jordon and Jarid Rankin, Paige Rankin and Shannon and Colleen Rankin, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her father, Neil MacNeil (1974), sister, Madelyn (1996), brother, John (2005) and Joan (in infancy).
Carol was a member and past president of the ladies division of the Sydney Curling Club and past president of the Provincial Innkeepers Guild. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel parish where she was active in the choir and CWL. Her career was in financial services and she retired in 2007.
She will be greatly missed by her in-laws and good friends, Darlene Rankin Costello, Donna Rankin Neville, Donnie and Cahill Rankin, as well as her many close friends who enjoyed her warm and positive personality. She dearly loved her family and friends, her dogs, good fellowship and laughter. Carol made everyone feel like her best friend and everyone who knew her was drawn to her.
Visitation for Carol Rankin will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Care Fund.
