We, the family of the late Mary Melvina (Sampson) Samson of Donkin, formerly of Louisdale are saddened to announce her death, which occurred on Monday, March 30, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Mary was the daughter of the late James G. and Ida Mae (Samson) Sampson.
She was born on March 23, 1930 in Louisdale, Cape Breton. Mary ‘Nena’ was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Our mom spent most of her life caring for others. She married our dad at 19 and never once complained about the many sacrifices she had to make in her life.
An avid gardener, she could be seen all summer working in her beloved flower gardens and trimming her trees. It brought our mother great pleasure to share the bounties of her work in her vegetable garden. To her, it was a labour of love.
Mary resided with her daughter Cynthia for the past 3 and 1/2 years. During this time, she faced many struggles with her health. She also made lasting friendships with the wonderful home-care workers who cared for her each day.
A very special thank you goes out to each and every one of them, especially Rose Matheson. Mom considered you a special lady, her friend. For that, we are grateful.
Mary is survived by her son, Blair (Gertrude), Louisdale; daughters, Yvonne (Thomas Short), Louisdale and Cynthia (Bruno Moelbert), Donkin; grandchildren, Brian (Carmen), Robert (Sharla), Rodney, Tracey (James), Scott (Amanda), Katrina and Eric; one great-grandson, Jace Bona; many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Zelia (Ernest Aucoin) Dartmouth; brother, Tony Sampson (Shirley), Goodwood.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Wilfred; sister, Theresa; brothers, Thomas, Leonard ‘Mickey’ and Leonard in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 in St. Louis Church, Louisdale at 11 a.m., with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial to take place in St. Louis Parish Cemetery, Louisdale.
Family flowers only please. Memorial donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of N.S., Kidney Foundation of N.S. or to the charity of one’s choice. To light a candle or to send condolences in memory of Mary, visit www.chboudreau.com.
