It is with sadness we announce the passing of Gerald Tonary, 73, of Olive Street, New Waterford, on March 29, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Gerald and Effie (Petrie) Tonary.
A man of strong faith, Gerald was a devoted member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church. He was a past Grand Knight of St. Anthony Daniel 3209 and a member of the William B. MacLeod 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Gerald was a pipe-fitter by trade who was, in earlier years, employed as a meat cutter at Hinchey\' Supermarket. He was also an employee at the K.O.C. until his retirement.
As a pastime, Gerald enjoyed playing darts, spending summers at the cottage in East Bay, watching the news and reading the paper.
Surviving are daughters, Kathleen (Sean) Casey, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Geraldine (Dominic) Loro, New Waterford; Shannon (Tony) Nemis, New Waterford; Lonita (Tony) Loro, River Ryan; brothers, Harold Tonary, New Waterford; Father Tom MacNeil, St. Ninians, Antigonish; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Stephenson, New Waterford; Irene (Noel) Funge, Carrying Place, Ontario; grandchildren, Ryan and Dean Casey, Angelo and Ricardo Loro, Jason and Daniel Nemis and Nicholas and Derek Loro; loving companion, Anita Bishop and children Annette, Sherri, Weldon and families; nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Leona (Stephenson) and by his mother and father-in-law Leonard and Christina Stephenson.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 1, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Gerald will take place Thursday, April 2, at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church, River Ryan, with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes cemetery at a later date. Following the funeral mass there will a luncheon held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in New Waterford. Members of the Knights of Columbus are asked to assemble in the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for a prayer service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Cancer Patient Care Fund Foundation at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
