Hughie "Chief" Knockwood

Hughie passed away peacefully August 5, 2008. Predeceased by both his parents, Louis Knockwood and Dorothy Knockwood. Lovingly survived by his wife Ilene, sons Henry, Randy (Irene) and two grandsons, Zachery and Dakota. Hughie was born in Dorchester, N.B., Sept. 3, 1939. In 1956 Hughie joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1960, Hughie married Ilene who was also in the RCAF. In his 21 years of Service, he went from Trenton to 4 Wing then to Courtenay where he retired in 1977. Hughie was very involved in coaching hockey: senior men’s and youth hockey. He was very sports minded and involved in a lot of sports. He was a member of the Auxiliary Coast Guard, Unit 160. After retiring from the Service, Hughie and Ilene traveled in their motor home across Canada, USA and spent winters in Mexico. In 1999, Hughie and Ilene moved back to N.B. and Hughie served a term as Chief at Fort Folly First Nations. They just moved back to Courtenay two-and-a-half months ago. A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, August 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Courtenay followed by a Celebration of Life at the Courtenay Legion at 1 pm.
