It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wendell Phinney on December 6, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Wendell was born on Nov. 1, 1943 in Midgic, New Brunswick where he grew up on the family farm. On Nov. 22, 1963, he married Irma, his wife of 45 years. They moved to Prince Albert, SK in May of 1964, where together they had two sons Don and Kelly. Wendell was employed for 14 years at Co-operative Fisheries where he had the opportunity to spend some time in Northern Saskatchewan. He worked a short time at Gulf Oil and also did some truck driving in Northern Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was then employed at Weyerhaeuser and retired after 27 years. After retirement he took a part-time job at the Co-op Grocery Store until he fell ill. Wendell enjoyed the outdoors, especially the family cabin at Candle Lake where he spent many years with Irma and their sons. These fun times continued with his grandchildren and other family friends. Wendell developed many strong friendships with his passion for riding snowmobiles and his motorcycle. He also enjoyed his trips to the mountains to downhill ski. Wendell is survived by his loving wife Irma (Stokes); his sons Don and Kelly (Joan Getz); his grandchildren Jordy, Cody, Gabrielle, Ashley, Brody, Noah and her mother Janice Hamilton; his faithful friend Striker; his sister Linda (David) Locke and their children Michael (Veronica) and Nancy (Jason); his brother Larry and his children Ryan and Bradley; his stepmother Eleanor Phinney; his uncle Bill Estabrook; his aunts Jeanette (Russell) Noiles, Doris Hastie and Bernrice Niles; and many cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and mother Walter and Dorothy (Anderson) Phinney; his father and mother-in-law John and Grace (Sears) Stokes; his brothers-in-law Neil Stokes and Basel Pierce; his nephew James Snowdown; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Wendell had an active involvement in the AA Program which helped him to achieve his goals and develop lifelong friendships. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 54–11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 60–12th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Dr. R.M.A. Sandy Scott officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
