North bay, Ont. – Roy W. Gates passed away suddenly at the North Bay General Hospital in North Bay, Ont, on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, in his 93rd year. Born in River Hebert, Jan. 7, 1917, to the late Leo and Lavinia (Belliveau) Gates. Roy was predeceased by his wife Marjorie (Burbine) in 1994. He was also predeceased by his brother Reg (Bud) Gates of Joggins and two sisters Audrey Quinn and Kathleen Arseneau, both of Amherst. He is survived by his daughter Shirley Bell (Jack) of Winnipeg, Man.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of Winnipeg, a sister Agnes (Fullerton) of Guelph, Ont., and loving companion Joyce Ordige of North Bay. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Amherst, N.S. Roy was in the RCAF from 1941 to his retirement in 1969. He then worked at Metro Motive as a driver from 1969 to 1982. Thanks to all of Roy’s great friends at the Royal Canadian Legion where he was a long-standing member of Branch 445 for 46 years. Also special thanks to Judy Evers, Richard and Nicole of North Bay for all their love and support. Cremation has taken place. A private family service and interment will be held in Winnipeg.
