It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather and brother Claude E. Ashford, age 86, longtime resident of Margaret Street, on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Rose Blanche, N.L., Claude was the son of the late John Thomas and Annie (Best) Ashford.
In his earlier years Claude was employed with H.B. Nickerson & Sons Ltd, North Sydney, he then sailed on iron ore boats for the Dominion Coal Company, later worked as a stevedore with C.N. Marine, and retiring as a steward with Marine Atlantic vessels on March 1, 1986. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and a long time member of the Fulton Orange Lodge.
He is survived by his loving wife Florence \'Flossie\' (Lewis) Ashford; his daughter, Ann Ball, Balls Creek; his son, Wayne (Gail) Ashford, Georges River; one brother, Russell (Gladys) Ashford, North Sydney; three grandchildren, Geoffrey, Andrew and Melissa and by three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, James Ashford, and his son-in-law, Charlie Ball.
Visitation for Claude will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service to be held Monday at 3 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
