SHORT, Rupert Carl– June 9, 1941 - March 25, 2009. Passed peacefully away at the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre at St. John’s, Newfoundland, Rupert Carl Short. Predeceased by his father Lewis and brother Everett Short and brother-in-law Bob Critch. Leaving to mourn son Andy (Deneen Gatehouse); daughters Paulette (Gordie Carter) and Valerie (Gilbert Swain) and their mother Pinah Short (nee Blackmore). Adored grandchildren: Blair and Amy Carter and Deneen’s children Nigel and Nathaniel; mother Mabel Short; brother David (Hilda); sisters: Joan (Raymond Bennett), Geraldine Critch, Patsy (Fred White) and sister-in-law Sue Short, as well as his special friend, Mary St. Croix (nee Yetman) and the entire Yetman family. Lifelong friends: Rick Hale, Terry Hart, Don Manuel, Harry Steele ... plus a multitude of close friends too numerous to name but not forgotten, as well as a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rupert was born in Beaumont, Long Island, and had a long and memorable career as a teacher and high school principal in St. Anthony, Virgin Arm and Lewisporte. He was a longtime member of the PC Party, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Irish Newfoundland Assoc., Wessex Society and Historical Society of Newfoundland. Rupert was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt as well as visit his cabin at Millertown. He loved to watch his grandson Blair play hockey and granddaughter Amy perform at her dance recitals. He leaves many friends, teachers and students with fond memories to last a life time. Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, on Friday, March 27th, from 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 28th at 2 p.m. at Barrett’s Chapel. A Memorial Service will also be held at St. Matthew’s United Church, Lewisporte on Saturday, April 4th at 2 p.m. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Rupert’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
