Shirley Anne (Tupper) Hatcher, 69, of Truro, N.S., passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2009, in the Victoria General Hospital, QEII, Halifax. Born Jan. 13, 1940, in Pictou County, she was the daughter of the late Rod and Ella (MacLean) Tupper and wife of the late Rev. William Chalmers Hatcher. Shirley received her training as a nurse from the VG and practised as a registered nurse in Halifax, Sydney and Summerside. She continued her professional career as an instructor at Holland College in Summerside. A truly giving person, she always put others before herself. She volunteered her time and energy to countless organizations and individuals. Shirley was a member of First United Church in Truro where she had served as an elder and was past president and life member of First United Church UCW, active member of Unit A, served on the pastoral care committee, long-time leader for the CGIT and participated widely in many church programs. Shirley was similarly involved in churches in Boiestown and Bathurst, N.B., Halifax and Sydney, N.S., and Summerside. She more recently volunteered with the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, Palliative Care Unit, East End Meals on Wheels, Douglas Street Elementary School, Canadian Cancer Society, Terry Fox Run and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. She touched and helped many individuals needing assistance with errands, drives, income tax returns and meals. Shirley is survived by her children, Peter, Calgary, Alta.; Karen (Susan), Halifax; Mark (Yvette), Truro; Michael (Linda), Toronto; grandchildren, Marian, Adam, Sarah, Rodney, Nicole, Daniel, William and Emma; brother, Bill (Georgie) Tupper and nephew David (Laura) Tupper of Kars, Ont. Along with her husband Cham, she was predeceased by her niece, Sharyl Tupper. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall -Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Shirley’s family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 7. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro. Reverend Allen Darby, Reverend Betty Darby and Reverend Sandy MacLean officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Private family interment will be held in Watson Cemetery.
