It is with heartfelt sadness that the Wiseman family announces the passing of our mother, Mary (MacIntyre) Wiseman, 1913-2009, at the Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home, Dartmouth, N.S. on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Born Sept. l8, 1913, Mary was a daughter of the late Theresa (MacInnis), Castle Bay, Cape Breton., N.S. and Joseph D. MacIntyre of Glace Bay, N. S.
She was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by brothers, Duncan, Alphonsus, Allan, Daniel (Donald) and Michael, as well as sisters, Sarah MacDougall (Angus), Margaret Dowe (Norris) and Christene Ellsworth (Walter). Her husband, John Will Wiseman (March, 1960), and two sons, John Joseph ‘Bob’ (May, 197l) and George Gregory (May, 2000) also predeceased her.
Mary is survived by seven children, Theresa Gertrude Nutter, Raleigh, N.C., Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Doucette (Cy), Woodstock, N.B., William Wiseman (Margaret), Sydney, N.S., James Wiseman, Broome’s Island, Md., Joan Gillis (William), Antigonish, N.S., June Thomas (Robert), Dartmouth, N.S., Daniel Wiseman (Bernadette), Glace Bay, N. S., 24 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Mom was a very strong woman who raised her family to contribute to society. She was active in her younger years in CWL (Immaculate Conception Parish), Home & School, Bridgeport and St. Anne’s.
She was very involved in community affairs at the municipal level in Glace Bay over the years, including being part of a Committee that lobbied to keep Grade IX in Bridgeport, establishing a Commercial Class at St. Anne’s High School , and having her street “paved”. A life-long member of the Liberal party, she actively participated in Federal and Provincial elections well into her 80s.
She valued education and worked hard to see that her family had opportunities in life that were denied to her. As a craftsperson, she created countless quilts over the years, and in her 70s, took up painting - a legacy of her talents now resides in our family homes. Through her great memory, she recorded events related to her childhood years in a coal mining town as well as her experiences as a coal miner’s wife.
An avid card player, she loved a good game of 500 and 45, especially with a good Cape Breton ‘cup of tea’. Always frugal, she abhorred waste, a reflection of her growing up in the lean 1920s and 1930s.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A Memorial Mass in celebration of Mom’s life, will be held at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, at a time to be determined.
The family expresses sincere thanks for the wonderful care Mom received at Northwood Manor, Halifax, and Oakwood Terrace, Dartmouth, N.S.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Glace Bay Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul Society (St. Anne’s Church), Glace Bay, N.S., Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home, Dartmouth, N.S., or charity of choice.
