It is with great sadness that we the family of Florence Newman, our Mother, announce her passing at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax on Friday April 24, 2009.
Born on March 24th, 1917 in Florence, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Umberson) Travers.
Mom was loved by sons Robert, James and Harold and by daughters Catherine, Jeanette and Gloria.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold Newman in 1975 and by a daughter Mildred. Florence was the last surviving member of her family being predeceased by brothers Nathaniel, John, and William; sisters Minnie, Sadie and Annie.
Mom lived for many years in Prime Brook before moving with her family to Edwardsville in 1960. She was well known for being a hard worker and an avid walker. She enjoyed visits from her neighbors and had a special fondness for all her children. ‘Nanny Newman’ is survived by 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Mom attended the Sydney Corps of the Salvation Army for many years and was a member of Home League.
Cremation will take place with a memorial service to be held in Sydney at a later date. Announcement to follow.
