PROUST - Alcide Joseph, aged 89 of Val Marie, SK, passed away peacefully April 18, 2009, at Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home in Ponteix, SK, with his family at his side. Prayers were said for Alcide on Thursday April 23, 2009, at 7:30pm. The funeral service was held Friday April 24, 2009, at 2:00pm from The Church of The Nativity Roman Catholic Church in Val Marie, SK, with Father Juanito Vargas and Father Raymond Carignan officiating. The organist was Angie Clement, the duet was sung by Jim Harbor and Cathy Grant. Eulogy was read by grandson George Andrews and the scripture reading was done by Theresa Laturnus. Urn bearer was grandson Andre Proust and cross bearer was grandson Allan Proust. Offerings were carried by grandsons Edward and Buddy Laverdiere. Ushers were Richard Glas and Randy Acker. The internment was held at Val Marie Community Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were all who shared in Alcide’s life. He is survived by his sisters, Marcelle, Marie, Alice, Leontine and Lawrence; his 5 children, Leon (Nicole) Proust their 3 children and 4 grandchildren, Philippe (Charmaine) Proust, Cecile (Keith) Andrews their 2 children, Ernest (Glory) Proust his 3 children and 3 grandchildren, Val(Ed) Laverdiere, their 3 children and 3 grandchildren; and his very special friend, Rosalind (Rusty) Holtby. Alcide is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by: his parents Emile and Valerie Proust; his wife Leona Proust in 1988; his brothers: Emile, Peter, Maurice; and his sisters: Valerie (Lily), Lucy, and Margarite (Peggy). Alcide was born in Ponteix, SK, on October 8, 1919. He attended school at Masefield School where he excelled in math. He married Leona Boulet on November 24, 1948, in Masefield, SK. In his early years Alcide worked on threshing crews at Renaud and then at Peace River. In 1937, he went to work on the railroad. In 1941, Alcide joined the Canadian Army and served in the Rocky Mountain Rangers in Canada and overseas, in the Aleutian Islands, until his discharge in May of 1945. He started farming with his father on the family farm. He took over the farm in 1949, and he farmed there until he retired in 1980. He lived in the home he and Leona built until he moved into the Foyer St. Joseph in March of 2009. He was a Member of Cadillac Branch #296 of the Royal Canadian Legion for 35 years until it closed; he then transferred to Beechy Branch #324 for 13 years. Alcide was also an avid curler for many years, and he and Leona loved square dancing. His special interests were fishing, hunting, playing cards and his garden and flower beds. His very special interest was his grandchildren. He never missed any family dinners, weddings, graduations, special anniversary or family get together. When any neighbour, friend or family member needed a hand Dad was the first one there to help. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Foyer St. Joseph Nursing Home 428 2nd Ave. Ponteix or Bridges Personal Care Home 332 2nd Street West Ponteix, SK. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Lemieux Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
