It is with much sorrow that we, the family, announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John Joseph ‘Blackie’ Brown which occurred Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Murray and Margaret ‘Maggie’ (MacDonald) Brown.
Blackie worked at Caledonia Colliery, Fort Louisbourg, Joe Parsons Construction; and was well known in town as a taxi driver for Victor Mills. But, Blackie was most known for his quick wit and his larger than life sense of humour. He enjoyed spending his time hunting and fishing with family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret (nee Cathcart); sons, David (Ann Marie) and Shawn (Janet); and daughter, Kelly (William MacIntyre); sister, Martina (Murray) MacKinnon; brother, Alex (Diane); seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Neil, Mary and Sadie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Friday 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Rev. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Blackie’s memory are suggested to the Cancer Society or charity of choice.
