William ‘Bill’ Edwin MacDonald
74, Glace Bay

William Edwin MacDonald, age 74 of Catherine St., Glace Bay passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.
Born in Florence, N. S. ,he was the son of the late Archie and Edith (Orr) MacDonald.
Bill was quite active in Knox United Church, Glace Bay. He was an elder and served on various church committees. He worked for Sydney Steel for more than 25 years, retiring as Mechanical Superintendent.
Bill led a very active life in sports and other activities. In the 1950’s he starred on defence for the Glace Bay Miner’s Junior Hockey Team and coached various teams as well. He remained active with tennis, skating, hiking and twice he conquered Gros Morne Mountain in Newfoundland. Bill was an avid cyclist who traveled many miles on his favorite racing bike.
His family was very proud of his many accomplishments.
Bill had varied interests, including bird watching and astronomy and was well read on many topics. Many of Papa Bill’s most cherished days were spent at the family cottage at Ross Ferry on the Bras d’Or where he found great pleasure in family boat trips and seeing the grandchildren take their first dive off the wharf
Bill is survived by his wife ,the former Shirley MacGregor; two daughters, Jean Anne (Sheldon) Farrow, Glace Bay, Wendy (George) Rideout, Rocky Harbor, Newfoundland; three sons, Robert, Glace Bay, Ross (Virginia), Kanata, Ontario, Douglas (Angela), Halifax and 3 brothers, Archie (Judy), Gordon, Ross Ferry and Robert (Jess), Sherbrooke, N.S.
Bill is survived by 14 grandchildren, Shaun, Lauren Farrow, Robert MacDonald, Carrie, Megan, Mandy Stubbard, Alexa, Gina, Gordon MacDonald, Aimee, Jillian Rideout, Christopher Jackson, Joel, Thomas MacDonald.
Bill was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Joan MacDonald and a daughter-in-law Wendy Stubbard.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Jackie MacDonald is Sunday after noon at 2 p.m. in Knox United Church, Glace Bay followed by a reception in the church basement. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date in Black Brook Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Bill, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre Expansion or Knox United Church.
