Beveridge, Helen Wilson, -93 – Truro, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009, in the Veterans’Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Greenock, Scotland in 1916, she was the daughter of the late Archibald Allan and Janet Wilson Beveridge. She immigrated with her family to Canada in 1927, settling in Truro where she graduated from the Colchester County Academy and The Provincial Normal College. She began her teaching career in 1935 at Cape Forchu, Yarmouth County, a place to which she returned to spend the summers during the rest of her life. Helen served in the RCAF (WD) for three years during World War II, first at #11 SFTS in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and then at RCAF headquarters in Ottawa until the end of the war. Following demobilization, she earned a BA degree from Dalhousie University and resumed her teaching career in high schools in Yarmouth, Amherst and Truro, where English literature became her main interest. In 1971 she became a professor of English Literature at the Nova Scotia Teachers College from which she retired in 1981. During her teaching years she traveled and studied in Great Britain and elsewhere in Europe and in 1953 received an Associateship in Education from the University of London, England. In 1980 she was honoured by the Atlantic Institute of Education as one of the ten outstanding teachers of Nova Scotia. Following retirement, she became an enthusiastic amateur water-colourist whose work was shown in galleries in Truro and Yarmouth. Helen was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Rev. Dr. G.A. Allan Beveridge and the Rev.J.M.W. Beveridge. Surviving relatives are a brother A.Allan Beveridge of Kitchener - Waterloo, Ontario, and nieces and nephews Cathie (Orin) Eisenhauer, John (Mary) Beveridge, Michael (Susan) Beveridge, Cyndy Beveridge, Ian (Carol) Beveridge, and long-time friend and fellow teacher, Margaret Swan. The family wish to thank all those who have been so very caring of Helen during the last years of her life: her doctors in Truro, Dr. Berghuis and Dr. Sharma, her nurses in the Colchester Hospital and in the Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, and her many wonderful caregivers and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, May 4, at 2 pm, in First United Church, Truro, with Rev. Betty Darby officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. A private interment will be held at Robie Street Cemetery.
