It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Francis Gouthro in the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on April 7, 2010, with his family by his side, after a six-year courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Maurice and Marjorie (McNabb) Gouthro.
A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, Moe began his teaching career in 1974, serving as a teacher and administrator in various schools under the jurisdiction of the Cape Breton-Victoria School Board. He retired in June 2009, after a fulfilling 35-year career, from Glace Bay Elementary, where he served as principal for five years. The friendships and bonds with his students gave "Mr. G." his inspiration for teaching.
He served on the executive of the Cape Breton District Nova Scotia Teachers Union in various capacities and also as the representative for the Cape Breton region on the NSTU provincial executive for eight years. Maurice was also a member of the board of directors of Seaview Manor. An avid golfer, Maurice served on the board of directors for Lingan Golf and Country Club including the position of president for four years. Many valuable friendships were formed in all Moe's life endeavours.
Maurice is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Gail (Mercer); daughters, Amy (Rob) Mahoney, Ottawa, Annette (Jody DeCoste), Cole Harbour, Adele (Jœl MacDonald), Halifax; brother, Servine (Dora), Ottawa, Gerald 'Jeckie' (Patsy), Coxheath; sisters, Merle (Berkley) Cameron, Antigonish, Lynn (Kevin) Kyte, Cole Harbour, Maureen (William) McLean, Reserve Mines; sister-in-law, Paula (Hinchey) Gouthro, Cole Harbour. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Johnny (Barb) Mercer, Kenny Mercer and sister-in-law, Roberta (Steve) Melnick. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, all whose relationships he cherished.
Maurice was also predeceased by brothers, Shawn and Blaine Gouthro, nephew, Billy MacLean and parents-in-law, Bob and Frances Mercer.
In honouring Moe's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass to celebrate Moe's life will be officiated by Fr. Leo Boone Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay, with a reception following in the church foyer. A family interment service will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Cape Breton Palliative Care Unit.
