It is with great sadness the family of the late Douglas Gordon Downey age 73, of Amherst announce his passing on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Moncton City Hospital with his family by his side.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Johnny and Leatha (Brewster) Downey.
He was a well-known businessman in Amherst where he owned and operated Doug's White Star Taxi, Downey's TV Rentals and involved in local real estate.
He had a passion for golf and enjoyed the company of his golf buddies. Doug was a member of the Amherst Golf and Country Club for the past 40 years. He also was a member of the Okeechobee Golf Club, Florida, for several years where he made his winter home.
Doug will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 54 years, the former Shirley Hicks, three daughters Sharon (Ernie) LeBlanc, Sandra (Martin) Ayotte and Donna (Curtis) White all of Amherst, grandchildren Mark and Adam Cormier, Michael LeBlanc and Kimberly White; great grandchildren Spencer, Evan Douglas, Kira Leatha and Ella Grace; brothers Carl (Doris) of Amherst and Kenny (Debbie) of Riverview, NB, two sisters Jean (Ray) Hedditch of Barrie, ON, Joyce Ann (Frank) Shestowsky of Campbellford, ON and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son Dougie Stephen, daughter Sherry Kim and brothers Ronnie and Donnie.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906)
Funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church, Amherst with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
Interment will follow in the Amherst Cemetery.
