Vernon Haines Amos, 93. Well known Cape Breton watercolour artist, Vernon Haines Amos, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2010, at Highcrest Sherbrooke Home for Special Care. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was born on April 25, 1916, on Vancouver Island, B.C., and spent his early years in and around Vancouver. He served four years in the Army overseas during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers, 4th Division.
In 1946, he married Jean Amos (nee Olsen) and they had two daughters.
His career in the sign business began in Vancouver and took him to Toronto, then Boston, Mass. After retiring in 1978, Vernon and his wife moved to Ingonish, Cape Breton, where they ran Spruce's Art Gallery for 20 years. Leisure time during this period was spent sailing and travelling. Vernon enjoyed the most recent years of his retirement in the village of Baddeck.
He is survived by wife, Jean Amos; daughters, Cynthia Ahern and Patrice Amos; son-in-law, Robert Ahern; grandsons, Eric and Brendan Ahern; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by twin brother, Harry Amos and younger brother, Gerald Amos.
He was a wise and gentle man whose quiet wit was a joy to all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be held Saturday, 1-4 p.m. in G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, St. Mary's Chapel, 34 Main St., Sherbrooke. There will be no funeral service by request and burial will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the dignified and compassionate care of the G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, St. Mary's Chapel, 34 Main St., Sherbrooke.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Vernon's name to a charity of choice.
