We the family of Dwayne Mackie, regret to announce the sudden passing of our son, father, brother and friend on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, Dwayne was raised in Gardiner Mines and graduated from Reserve District High School in 1991. He was the youngest and only son of Harvey and Marilyn (Wrathall) Mackie.
Dwayne was a kind, gentle man who touched the hearts of many. His creative skills led him into a career in landscaping in Halifax. For six years he was employed with Linden Landscaping. Dwayne returned home and began putting his many talents to work as a ceramic tile setter, bricklayer and renovator; all skills he acquired from working side by side with his mentor and best friend, his dad. He was a member of the Brick Layers Union BAC, Local 1-NS. Over the last year Dwayne's dream of having his own business became a reality when he opened his own company, Mackie All-Terrior Improvements. He was known as an outstanding guitar player who always made time to play his guitar and enjoyed jamming with friends and family. Dwayne loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, golfer and hockey enthusiast, who played in the gentleman's league.
Besides his parents, Dwayne is survived by three sisters, Darlene Mackie, Dominion/Victoria, B.C., Brenda (Murray) McNeil, Dominion, Pauline Gouthro, Reserve Mines; fiancée, Shelley Duggan and their two children, Emma and Randy, whom he adored. Dwayne was also cherished by Shelley's two children, Eileen and Ashley Duggan. He also leaves to mourn nieces, Sarah and Hillary McNeil, Samantha Gouthro; nephew, Aaron Gouthro; aunts, uncles and his many friends.
Dwayne was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Henry and Laura (MacLeod) Wrathall, paternal grandparents, Daniel and Sarah (McNeil) Mackie, brother-in-law, Blain Gouthro and his cherished family pet, Lady.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Cremation to follow. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall.
