It is with great sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of George Donovan which occurred Friday, April 23, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Timothy and Margaret (Royal) Donovan.
George was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was employed as a miner with the Princess Colliery, CP Rail and later as custodian for the Canada Post Office in North Sydney. He volunteered for a number of years with the Miners Memorial Manor, Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club and the Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines. George had a passion for country music and was an accomplished musician.
George is survived by his companion, Agnes Hawco; daughter, Mary (Eric) Lycett, Dacre, Ont.; son, Tommy (Elaine), Sydney Mines; two sisters, Shirley (Claude) Young, Sydney Mines, and Margaret (Leslie) Strickland, Leitches Creek; nine brothers, Michael (Lawrence), Halifax, Tom (Charlene), Oshawa, John (Barbara), Florence, Kenneth (Ann), North Sydney, Jimmy (Maureen), Sydney, Harold (Lillian), Sydney Mines, Emmanuel (Daisy), North Sydney, Peter (Marie), Alder Point, and Alexander, Sydney Mines. George is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christopher, Allan, Erika, Ernest, Keelan, Maggie and Katie, all of Ontario, and Timmy, Sydney Mines; two great-grandchildren, Keagan and Mackenzie. He will be sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dolena Eliza (MacPherson) Donovan, one sister, Jane Rose and a number of siblings in infancy.
In accordance with George's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Monday, April 26) from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 27 in St. Pius X Church, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. Reception to follow. Burial to take place in St. JOseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in George's memory may be made to the Miners Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines, or to a charity of choice.
