Hilliery Augustine 'Gus' Miles of 290 Lake Rd., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at Glace Bay Hospital on April 24, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Birch Grove, June 26, 1922, he was a son of Marjorie (Hillier) Miles and William B. Miles.
He was predeceased by his brother, John J. Miles and his sister, Mary Rita Miles.
He is survived by his brother, William B. Miles; and his sisters, Evelyn McDonald and Joan MacLeod, both of Glace Bay. Gus was a loving uncle, granduncle and great-granduncle to John Arthur Miles, New Brunswick; his daughter, Danielle (Graham) Smith and their children, Ryan, Rochelle and Nolan; Bill (Gloria) Miles, Glace Bay; Marjorie (Louis) Fougere, East Bay, and their children, Jenet Delaney and son, Campbell, Halifax, Janelle (Jeff) Osborne and son, Logan, Sydney, Michelle (Leo) Cormier, Sydney, and their children, Renee and Danielle; Rene Fougere, Moosonee, Ont.; Joe (Rose Mary) Miles, Glace Bay; Edward (Lisa) MacLeod, Antigonish, and their children, Shelby and Dakota; Darryl (Kim) MacLeod, Ottawa, and their children, Sam and Emily; and Aileen (Ronnie) Butler, Glace Bay, and their children, Kathleen, Amanda, Jillian and Brandon.
Gus was employed for many years as a driver and supervisor at Phalen's Bakery in Glace Bay. A musician during his life, he accompanied his brothers John and Bea on the piano as they played many favourite fiddle tunes. He also played with well known musicians Johnny Wilmot and Jimmy Mahon.
Visitation will be Monday, April 26 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A mass of resurrection to celebrate Gus's life will take place in Holy Cross Church, Seaview Street, Glace Bay, Tuesday, April 27 at 2 pm., Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating.
