It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Ronald Clancy, on Friday, April 30, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness with cancer.
Ronnie was born Oct. 28, 1946, only son of the late Ronald and Adelaide (Barrie) Clancy.
Ronnie was employed by the Cape Breton-Victoria School Board until his retirement in 2001. His retirement brought with it a big smile, knowing now he could do all the things he enjoyed. His visits to his daughter and son's homes were priorities on his list of 'to do' things.
His favourite pastimes included spending time with his only grandchild, Hunter; fishing with his family and friends on his boat the "Iggy Jiggy", his little piece of heaven was summers spent at his trailor on the Bras d'Or Lake, watching the Toronto Maple Leafs, and gatherings with family and friends.
He was a friend to many, always ready to help others without expecting anything in return. He was described best by one of his nurses as a "gentle giant."
Ronnie had been a scout leader at St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek for a number of years, he played hockey with the Northside Teachers and was a member of St. Joseph parish, North Sydney.
He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate of 39 years, Marlene (Thomas) Clancy; daughter, Janice (Steven) Benoit, and grandson, Hunter, Cole Harbour; son, Ross, Calgary; sisters, Marie (late Reg MacDonald), Sharon (late Ernie Morrison); sisters-in-law, Jean (Norm) Parker, Joan (John Parsons); brothers-in-law, Bill (Sandra) Thomas, Dave (Sandra) Thomas; many nieces and nephews, who loved him very much; and an infinite number of friends.
At this time our family would like to express deep appreciation to Sandy Cantwell-Kerr, the angels from Palliative Care, and the VON that made Ronnie's last days as peaceful and comfortable as possible.
Visitation for Ronnie will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to Palliative Care, VON, or the Regional Cancer Centre.
Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com
