After a long and enjoyable life, Howard Wilson Gillis, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, seven daughters and one son, on Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Gordon and Dorcas (Dearing) Gillis.
Howard was a pipefitter and welder by trade, and worked for many years at the heavy water plant in Port Hawkesbury, as well as construction sites across the country. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, Roseanne (MacNeil) Gillis; daughters, Karen Quirk (Richard), Joanne (Brian Pyke), Marlene Gillis, Patricia MacIsaac (Stephen Devoe), all of North Sydney, Wanda (George Davis), Florence, Carol Ann (James Beaulieu), Greenwood, Vickie (Mel Mansfield), Bras d'Or; one son, Howard Blair Gillis, at home; his sister, Wanda McGean (Brian); his brother, Keith, and sister-in-law, Mary Gillis all of North Sydney; and by 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren (we love you grampy).
Howard was predeceased by his twin brother, Bramwell, and brother, Kenneth.
The family would like to thank Dr. Knott, Palliative Care, VON and the nurses on 4th floor of the Northside General Hospital for the care and kindness shown to Howard and his family.
Visitation for Howard will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. from St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
