Duncan Roderick Mackay
Age 94 of the Maritime Oddfellows Home ,Pictou and formerly of Whitney Pier passed away on Saturday May 8th ,2010 in the Maritime Oddfellows Home .
Born May 18th, 1915 in Whitney Pier, Sydney, Nova Scotia
He was the son of the late Murdock Mackay, Rear Baddeck and Catherine MacKillop, Goose Cove
Duncan was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Predeceased by his wife Margaret (Mackenzie) and son Iain; sisters Catherine and Rhoda.
Surviving are second-wife Phyllis and sons and daughters Donald (Carol), Ann (Brian) Cameron, daughter-in-law Janet, Stewart (Denise), Sheila (Mike) Fitzpatrick and Graeme (Leah). Papa had many loving grandchildren: Glenn, Gail, Leigh Ann, Sheila, Duncan, Neil, Krista, Briana, Douglas, Graeme, Melanie, Danielle, Julie, Michael, Jennifer, Sarah, Maggie, Thomas, Laura and Emily. Great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Kaitlyn, Aaron, Brian, Megan, Katherine, Christy, Duncan, Caelum, Owen, Matthew, Hailey, Riely, Abby and Griffin. In-laws Buddy (Rhoda), Mary (Harry) along with many nieces and nephews.
"Papa" always had time for and showed great pride in his family.
On May 24, 1935 Duncan went to work as a tallyman at the International Coal Pier in Sydney. At the outbreak of the war, Duncan was appointed as the Ministry of War agent in charge of Sydney Harbour shipping responsible for all convoy ships entering the harbour. After the war, Duncan continued working for the Dominion Coal Company (DEVCO) until his retirement.
From his home on Matilda Street in "The Pier", Duncan had devoted his entire life to his community and caring for people.
In December 2002, Duncan was honoured by the provincial government with the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to his communities. In December, 2003, he was one of eight from Nova Scotia awarded the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award.
As a lifetime member of Boy Scouts, Duncan was a Cub and Scout leader and organized many camps in New Campbellton. Also, Duncan attended two World Scout Jamborees in Greece and Idaho.
He was longtime active member of Trinity United Church and was the first Lay President of Maritime Conference of United Church of Canada.
Duncan was an active member of the Masonic Order (50 year member), York Rite Bodies and Shriners.
Other community involvements include: Whitney Credit Union Executive, Whitney Pier Historical Society, Active member of CCF and NDP party, Whitney Pier Rink founding member, Alderman and Deputy Mayor for Sydney, Sydney Harbour Board, VON executive member, Founding member of Clan Mackay Society - Cape Breton Chapter, Sydney Co-op Society, and Howard House Association.
Duncan was proud of his Highland heritage, a Gaelic speaker and a long-time bag piper. Also he was an avid reader especially interested in history. As well, a big hockey fan - Go Habs Go!
The family wishes to thank all the people who loved and cared for Duncan during his later years.
A public memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 2 P.M. in the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou with Rev. Louis Ihasz and Rev. Vincent Ihasz officiating.
A committal service will be held at a later date in New Campbellton .
Donations in memory of Duncan may be made to the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou or to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the H.W.Angus Funeral Home , New Glasgow.
