We, the family, regret to announce the passing of our dear mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, Great-Nana Jennie, aunt and friend, Jennie MacNeil of New Waterford at the age of 92.
Better known as ‘Little Jennie’, she was born Nov. 3, 1916, in River Hebert, N.S.
Jennie has been in failing health the past four years and was very fortunate to have her daughter-in-law, Effie McNeil, as her wonderful caregiver. The care and love Effie had given her during the past four years was exceptional.
Jennie came to New Waterford as a young girl, where she met and later married her husband, the late Dan William McNeil. She lived on 4 Catherine St., Scotchtown, for many years. She was a parishioner of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael’s Church.
Jennie was the daughter of the late Dena and Michael Burke of River Hebert, N.S.
Surviving are her sons, James (Sandra), Hampton, N.B., Albert (Beano) Effie and Willie, New Waterford; daughter, Joanne Gallant, New Waterford, Jennie’s only brother, Albert (Mary) Digby, N.S. Also surviving are her 13 grandchildren, Jim Dan (Natalie) McNeil, Michael McNeil, Tim (Susan) McNeil, all of Alberta, Stephen and Michelle McNeil, Kelly McNeil, Mary McNeil (Frank) Delaney, all of Ontario, Patrick (Kim) McNeil, Hampton, N.B., Jennifer (Terry) Dye, Coxheath, Melissa, Diane, Frances Gallant, Willie McNeil Jr. (Tammy), New Waterford. Jennie is survived by 15 great-grandchildren, Josh, Taylor, Travis, Lucas and Logan McNeil, all of Alberta, Jenna Delaney, Tearna McNeil, Courtney Jensen, Kayden McNeil, all of Ontario, Daniel Cooke, Ayden McNeil, New Brunswick, Samuel and Gabriel Gallant, Skylar Bennette, New Waterford and Emily Dye, Coxheath. Jennie is survived by 15 nieces and seven nephews between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario, who loved their Aunt Jennie and Special relative, Lou Ann Delaney of Philadelphia, USA.
Jennie was predeceased by her husband, Dan Willie McNeil in 1978, son-in-law, Gerard Gallant, daughter-in-law, Paula McNeil, precious granddaughter, Donna Marie McNeil, beautiful great-grandson, Caemen Reddy McNeil. Also by four sisters and three brothers and some very close friends, especially her companion for over 25 years, Duncan MacDonald, Dominion, who passed away Feb. 14, 2009.
Jennie was a very active lady all her life. She was a member of the seniors and pensioners club, New Waterford. She was an active member of the ladies auxiliary Branch 15 Royal Canadian Legion, New Waterford, many years ago. Jennie played women’s softball for the Shamrocks in Cumberland County from 1936-1939. She also played in Brantford, Ont. in 1945. She received many awards. Jennie was a great bowler for many years. She played in leagues and tournaments around Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. She played darts up until 2007 at the pensioners club and at the Branch 40 Legion in Glace Bay.
Jennie worked at K-Mart in the bakery for many years, at Heather Bowling Lanes, as a cook at Heather Tavern, and McKeigan’s Bakery, New Waterford. Jennie was famous for her great tea biscuits and being a great cook and baker. She had a countless number of friends, just to mention a few old bowling gals, Alice, Marie, Mary B., Annie Mae, Peggy and friend Jennie McPherson.
Mother dearest you always had a smile on your face for everyone, a heart of gold and you treated everyone with the utmost respect. She would always say “Come on in for a cup of tea and of course lunchâ€. There was no job too big or small for her. She always had open arms, hugs and kisses for all, never ending love.
A special thank you goes out to Dr. Oei for his special care and lots of laughs in his office over the years. Jennie thought so much of him as her doctor and she would call him Dr. Weed.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Parish of St. Leonard/St. Michael Church, River Ryan, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Immediately following the funeral mass there will be a luncheon held at the Carmel Centre. All are welcome to join the families.

Dear Mother
We lost a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and special friend. Although our hearts are broken today, we have fond and great memories. One day our hearts will mend but the emptiness will never end. God bless you mother, you will be surely missed. Rest in peace, we love you.
