James (Jim) Archibald Smith, 69, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2010, in Saint John, NB. Jim was born in Andover, Victoria County, NB to Harold and Ruth Smith. Jim is survived by his son, Matthew Smith, daughter-in-law, Amber Binney, and grandchildren, Archer, Lexx, and Nolan Smith; son, Jock Smith and daughter-in-law, Catherine Stevenson; brother Terry Smith, sister-in-law Louise Smith, and nieces Karen, Ruth, and Kristie; nephew Dennis Evans and his wife Tara Fleming. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie Smith on March 4, 2010 and his daughter, Tara Lynn Smith in 1992. Jim received his teaching certificate from the NB Teacher's College in 1960. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in1966. Jim completed his Bachelor of Education at UNB in 1971 and his Masters of Education at UNB in 1973. Jim was best known for his work as an educator. He began his career teaching in McAdam, he then taught at Fredericton High School and later accepted a position as Vice-Principal of Harvey High School, where he spent the majority of his teaching career, retiring in 1993. He was well respected and admired by students and faculty alike. Jim enjoyed coaching sports, including soccer and curling, and coached the Harvey High School soccer team to a provincial championship. He also coached the New Brunswick curling team at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, and was a member of the New Brunswick Curling Association. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and explore his woodlands in Harvey, NB. In later years he worked a hobby mill, specializing in cedar decking. Jim was a proud husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be missed.
Visitation will be held at Swan Funeral Home, 1826 Highway 3, Harvey Station, NB on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with service to follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Kay Clowater officiating. Committal service will then be held for James and Bonnie at Harvey Settlement Cemetery. A reception will follow at St. Andrew's Church CE Centre, 2350 Route 3, Harvey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of the following: Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, IWK Health Centre Foundation (Halifax, NS), or the Tara Lynn Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund at Harvey High School NB. www.flewellingswan.com
