We are heartbroken to announce the death of Ria Murray which occurred Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, N.S.
Born in Tilburg, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, she was the only daughter of the late Henricus & Adriana (Vermetten) Franken.
Ria and her family endured the hardships of the Second World War but always said they were the lucky ones as their city was one of the first to be liberated in November 1944. It was then that she met her future husband Stan. She immigrated to Canada May 22, 1958. Ria was lovingly welcomed into the Murray/Kauffman family. Ria and Stan were married June 18 ,1958 at St. Theresa Church, Sydney. Ria was a kind and generous lady who devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her trips to Holland, Alberta and British Columbia, but always loved coming home to Cape Breton and spending summers at the bungalow in Ironville. Ria had been a beautiful seamstress and was proud of the garments she made for her family.
Ria is survived by her only daughter, Jeanette (Peter) Chafe, Port Hawkesbury with whom she resided; sons, Kevin (Melanie), Sydney and Marcel (Karen), Edmonton; grandchildren, Jessica Chafe (Devin Brow) Port Hawkesbury, Emily Chafe (Steve Rankin) Halifax and Evan Murray, Sydney. She is also survived by her brother Jan, his wife Willie, sister-in-law Anneke, all of Tilburg; special friend and companion, John Mertens, North Sydney and many loving nieces and nephews in Canada and Holland.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 39 years Stan; brother, Andre and son, Allan in infancy; brothers and sisters-in-law, Aloysius ‘Wishie’ Murray, Patrick Murray, Jennie Kauffman, Margaret MacDougall and Mercedes Bradford.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, Sydney Sunday, May 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Whitney Ave, Monday, May 11 at 10 a.m. with Fr. James Oliver presiding. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations in Ria’s memory may be made to Strait Richmond Palliative Care, An Cala Palliative Care or Cape Breton Cancer Centre Patient Fund.
