It is with saddened hearts, we the family of Bernard J. MacKinnon, announce his passing on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
Born in Grand Mira South, he was the son of the late Charles and Lucy (Gillis) MacKinnon.
He was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer parish and former KOC member. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the security department Sydney Steel Corp. for 40 years. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during the Second World War. Bernie earned the rank of Corporal, having served in France, Germany and Holland. He received various medals, including, France-Germany Star and the Dutch Medal of Remembrance for the liberation of Holland-1945. He was also a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. He loved cars, animals and the Detroit Red Wings hockey team.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Penny; and his children, son, Lorne (Linda), Sydney; daughters, Brenda (Michael) MacDonald, Bedford, N.S., Barbara (Michael) Kennedy, Cheryl (Bill) Neville, all of Sydney; sister, Theresa MacNeil, Sydney; brothers, Allie (Pauline) Coxheath, Joe (Mary) ‘Girlie’, Sydney; 10 grandchildren, Lorne (Patricia), Krista, Karen (Mike), Christina, Laura, Bhreagh, Deanna, Nicole, Andrew and Shaun; four great-grandchildren, Shianne, Skye, Stirling and Alexander. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, son-in-law, Fred Butts, brother-in-law, Phil Penny and sisters-in-law, Kay Jamael, Marina Newman and Shirley Wojick.
He was predeceased by his darling daughter, Pauline (2005), also by brothers, Lauchie, John, John in infancy, sisters, Mamie, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, Jean and Jessie.
Visitation for Bernie MacKinnon will take place Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
