The death of S. Fraser Campbell, of Saint John West, occurred on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at Ridgewood Veterans' Centre, after a period of failing health. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on August 23, 1918, he was a son of the late Charles and Mae (Curnew) Campbell. During a lifelong career in the bakery industry, he held various positions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, retiring in 1984 as vice-president of production at Eastern Bakeries Ltd. in Saint John. A gifted athlete in his earlier years, he was an outstanding hockey player in the old Antigonish - Pictou - Colchester League, as a skillful center and winger. His hockey career was interrupted by the Second World War, when he enlisted in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Regiment. Selected for officers' training, he went overseas as a lieutenant and participated in the Normandy D-Day landing of 1944. He became a German prisoner-of-war when his unit was surrounded on the beach. Although he was involved in two escape attempts, he remained a captive until the war ended in 1945. He returned to the bakery business and held a number of executive positions until his retirement. Active in curling and golf, he traveled to many overseas bonspiels as a supporter of World Curling Tournaments and made many friends among the international curling fraternity, particularly the Scottish curlers, many of whom he entertained at his home. For many years he was instrumental in staging the popular local "Butternut Bonspiels." Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Ralph; his first wife Florence (Morgan) Campbell; his second wife Irene (Crowley) Campbell. He is survived by daughters, Shirley Black (John) and Beverly O'Brien of Saint John; granddaughter, Kelly Polley (Peter) of Halifax; two grandsons, Shaun Black of Halifax and Greg Black (Gen) of Raleigh, North Carolina; great - granddaughters, Sarah and Katie Polley of Halifax; as well as a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and sister and brothers-in-law.
Resting at Castle Funeral Home, "Fallsview Chapel", 309 Lancaster Ave, Saint John West (634-1701) visitation will take place on Sunday, May 30, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. Funeral service will be held at Castle Funeral Home "Fallsview Chapel" on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
