NEW GLASGOW – George William Bates, 88, of Bennett Street, New Glasgow, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Saturday, May 9th, at the Queen Elizabeth Health Science Centre, Halifax.
Born in Westville, George was a son of the late James “Percy” and Jenny (Jeffers) Bates.
George was a veteran of the Second World War, having served from 1942-1945, and was recognized for his dedication in service.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Marion (Fraser); children; Lee (Robin), Calgary, AB; Sheila (Don), Cambridge, ON; grandchildren; Scott, Dawn and Lauren; great grandchildren; Adam, Scott, John and Chedon; several favourite nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers; Carl, Donald, and Lloyd.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Restorative Care Unit in Pictou and the staff of the QE II for all their help. Also, special thanks to all who have helped during these difficult times.
The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, in the H. W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Leo Fletcher officiating.
Cremation to follow the service. Burial will be in the Auburn Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of George may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.
