PICTOU - David Lowden Barnard, 82, of Harbour Crescent, Pictou, passed away June 2, 2010 in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow after a brief illness.
Born in Bayview, December 9, 1927, and brought up in Central Caribou, he was a son of the late Harry A. and Laura Belle (Lowden) Barnard.
David was very proud of his Lowden heritage. An electrician by trade, he worked for the former company of C.E. MacCarthy Ltd. He was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church, Pictou, an Elder for over 50 years, and Representative Elder for many years. Always interested in his community, David was the last surviving charter member of the Pictou Lions Club, where he held a life membership and received many honours, among them The Melvin Jones Fellowship. He was a Past Noble Grand of Eastern Star I.O.O.F. Lodge, No. 1, Pictou, and had been recognized as 'Outstanding Volunteer' for the Town of Pictou in 1993. He helped out yearly with The Pictou-North Colchester Exhibition, was a former member of the Pictou Regional Housing Authority, and was caretaker of Central Caribou Cemetery for many years.
Surviving are his wife of over 50 years, Jennie (Johnson); brother, Frank (Donna), Hamilton, Ontario; sisters, Elizabeth (Jack) Gammon, and Esther (Alden) Beck, both of Lyons Brook; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a niece, Janice Gammon; and a brother and sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Saturday from First Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Rev. Iona MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Central Caribou Cemetery.
