Erhart Eman Nagel
October 23, 1918 – May 10, 2009
Erhart Nagel was born on October 23, 1918 on the farm near Mazenod, Saskatchewan to Daniel and Lydia Nagel. He grew up there with four sisters and two brothers. His formal education ended at about Grade eight and being the oldest boy in the family, his life long career in farming started. He helped his Mother and family on the farm and also worked for neighbors. He farmed with his brother, Uncle Fred Nagel and brother-in-law Carl Hoehn at Mazenod. It was near Mazenod where he met Hilda Rose who was teaching at the local school and was boarding with his lifelong friend, Herb Rogers and his wife. He was a lifelong learner of almost anything he thought he needed to do. Before he and Hilda were married, he worked a few winters in a lumber camp in Alberta and learned the business of plumbing and heating with Uncle Fred Acton in Kirkland, Ontario. After moving to the farm at D’Arcy, he worked a few winters plumbing and heating in Rosetown for Joe Fabic and later went into his own business with Cliff Hamel before selling the business to Alex Lesser so he could stick to farming after his children were born. Erhart continued to farm until his late 70’s/early 80’s when Hilda passed away in 1994. A year after her passing, Erhart met Lola, remarried and retired in Moose Jaw where he lived until May 10, 2009. While on the farm, he learned carpentry and welding, mostly self-taught. This allowed him to build, fix or modify almost anything from machinery for the farm to his own eyeglasses. It did not seem to matter to him that he did not know much about what he was trying to build or fix. He just did it anyway. There was no such thing as “can’t do itâ€â€¦he always found a way. He built or help build every building on the farm. This “learn as you go†attitude was with him all his life, right down to his own health and the things that ail you as you get older. Erhart is survived by his family; his wife Lola; her two daughters Sharon (Darryl) [son Warren] and Jan (Brian) [son Christopher] all of Moose Jaw and son Jim (Annette) of Nakomis; daughter Barbara of Weyburn and her son Dylan (Wendy, Ryan & Samantha) of Saskatoon; son Bernard (Gilda) of D’Arcy his daughters Jana (Darcy) of Innisfree, AB, Christie of Saskatoon and Laurissa of D’Arcy; sister Wanda and families of Kirkland Lake and Ontario, brother Albert and families of Vernon, Alberta and B.C.; brother Fred (Ada) and families from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and B.C. as well as Hilda’s surviving family members across Canada. He was predeceased by his first wife Hilda May, sister Martha (Sarnia), Lydia (Mazenod) and Elsie (Saskatoon) and his parents Daniel and Lydia (Wener) Nagel. The Funeral Service for Erhart will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel with Pastor Joan Tessier officiating. Interment to follow in the D’Arcy Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to a Charity of Choice. Clements Rosetown Funeral Home entrusted with the arrangements.
