Gail Theresa Stephen of Little River, Albert County, NB died at her home on Thursday, June 10, 2010 after a period of failing health. Gail, who was born in Saint John on December 12, 1948, was the second eldest grandchild of the late Sir Louis and Eva Stephen and the eldest child of the late Peter Stephen (former owner and operator of Stephen's Drug Store, Haymarket Square) and Anne (Laird) Stephen. Gail is survived by her son Dr. Stephen Harley of Halifax, NS: four sisters, Brenda (Mrs. John McIntyre of Rothesay), Paula Semaan of Riverview, Janice (Mrs. Paul Gallant of Moncton), and Dianne of Eastern Passage, NS; two brothers, Rev. Father Peter Stephen of Saint John and Michael of Hampton; one grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Gail was born in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish and spent most of her younger years as a member of Holy Trinity Parish. She attended Holy Trinity Elementary School, St. Peter's Intermediate School, and graduated from Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax, NS. Following high school she spent the next twenty working years in the Saint John area and then, as a member of a religious community with which she was associated, moved to Little River, just outside Salisbury, where she resided for the last twenty years. She is the first of the 33 grandchildren of the late Sir Louis and Eva Stephen to come to the end of her earthly journey and she will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. There will be a private funeral service in Little River, NB at the private chapel of the religious community with which she was affiliated, and the interment will take place at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Saint John. Relatives and friends who would like to pay their last respects are invited to join her family for the graveside Committal Prayer Service and Final Commendation led by her brother Rev. Father Peter Stephen, at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery on Westmorland Road, Saint John on Monday, June 14, 2010 at 1:00 PM. Following the Committal Service, there will be a reception at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
