Stellarton - William F. "Bill" Knoll, 88, passed away at the Aberdeen Hospital on Thursday, June 10. Born & brought up in Saint John, N.B., he was the son of William Knoll Sr. and Margaret (Graham) Knoll. His first wife and the mother of his six children was the late Agnes Mary (Casey) Knoll. He was pre-deceased by sister Joan and brothers Raymond & Graham. During World War II, Bill served 4 years in the Canadian Artillery. He then attended StFX University and Nova Scotia Technical College, graduating as a mechanical engineer. He then went to work at Trenton Works where he held several positions before retiring as General Manager in 1985. Under his leadership, this rail car fabrication plant peaked in employment at over 2200 and became Pictou County's largest economic force. Bill was active in local politics and served two terms as Deputy Mayor of New Glasgow. Bill had two hobbies, golf and bridge. He served two terms as President of the Abercrombie Golf Club and championed the club's expansion from nine to eighteen holes in the late sixties. He was a charter member of the New Glasgow Duplicate Bridge Club and was an ACBL Gold Life Master at the time of his death. He is survived by his second wife Florence (Snelgrove) Knoll, as well as six children: Peggy Houliston (Ottawa), Carol Riley (Vancouver), Bill (New Glasgow), Pat (Calgary), Bob (Calgary), Philip (Halifax); sixteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, two step-sons; five step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. Bill will be waked at the at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 15 from 7PM to 9PM. Funeral will be at 1PM on Wednesday, June 16 at Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. This will be followed by an "Irish" Reception at the Abercrombie Golf Club from 3PM till 5PM.
