It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Wallace “Wally†Owen Donald in the arms of his wife and with family members by his side, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Born on April 9, 1942, he was the youngest son of the late Wallace E. and Annie (Cole) Donald. Wally is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth (Guy), his sons, Neil, Dartmouth; Ross (Susan), Oromocto, N.B.; his daughter, Beth, Halifax; their mother Carol Leigh (Coates), Clifton Royal, N.B., and young grandchildren, Chase and Kathleen. He is also survived by his older brother, Jack (Marion) of Prince Edward Island, the last remaining member of his immediate family, and by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, and two of man’s best friends, Toby and Odie. Wally was predeceased by his sisters, Verna, Rae, Isabel (Byron) Weeks, Jean (Fred) Turner and brothers, Dr. Leigh (Grace) and James (Betty). Since his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in November 2008, Wally bravely fought his illness with grace, courage and determination and never gave up hope. He attended Alma District school and Alberton High School, Prince Edward Island, from where he graduated in 1958. He entered Dalhousie University in Halifax and was awarded a Diploma of Pharmacy in 1962. After working for three years as a pharmacist, he returned to Dalhousie in 1965 to complete his predentistry education. He entered the Dalhousie Faculty of Dentistry in 1966, and graduated with his D.D.S. in 1970. He served as a dental officer with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1970 to 1975. He entered graduate school studies in orthodontics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1975, graduating in 1977 and returning to Nova Scotia, setting up his private practice in Dartmouth. In 1979, he joined the Division of Orthodontics in the Faculty of Dentistry at Dalhousie University, where he was an assistant professor in the faculty from 1981 to the late 1990s. Wally was the president of the Atlantic Orthodontic Society, a director of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Canadian Dental Association and the Nova Scotia Dental Society. He was also a past president of the Halifax County Dental Society. He retired from active private practice in 2002. During his life, Wally loved travelling with his wife, to places throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. During the winter months, they enjoyed spending time in Arizona, where he made many dear friends, who kept in constant contact during his illness. Like his friends and family across Canada, they sent cards, letters and made many calls of encouragement and hope. All will miss him dearly. Besides travel, Wally loved get-togethers with family and friends, both in Canada and Arizona, playing cards, making his own batch of wine, going to dances, and enjoying life to the fullest. He was also an avid sports fan, who loved curling and especially golf. He was a member of Brookfield Golf Club. Wally and his wife were blessed with kindness from family, neighbours and friends especially during the last several months of his illness. A special thank you to everyone who cared for him, whether it was friends and neighbours who brought food and paid a visit to his home or in hospital, and to his medical staff, especially the Victorian Order of Nurses and Palliative Care staff and the doctors of the VG and Halifax Infirmary sites. Visitation will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, Friday, May 15, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of Wally's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, in the funeral home chapel.
