Graham Herman Smith
1936-2010
SMITH, Graham Herman - 74, of Blair Lake Road, Amherst, passed away June 15, 2010 in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Nappan, N.S. Born on March 8, 1936 in Amherst, N.S. he was a son of the late Russell and Maude Smith of South Athol, N.S.
Graham was a farm boy with a passion for cars. He started out as a mechanic at the Maccan Garage working on Studerbakers. He went on to become a well known and respected Amherst businessman. His business ventures included owning and operating three car dealerships,with Graham Smith Toyoto being his latest , prior to his retirement. He had a special affection for his Toyota Land Cruiser and a tractor called "Alice".
Graham was a longtime member of the Nappan United Church. He was also a member of the choir and really enjoyed singing.
He and Barb planted a large vegetable garden every spring and enjoyed sharing it with all their friends and neighbors. Canoe trips were a spring ritual and always included taking his adored poodle, Digger Dog.
His interests also included carpentry and he was an avid wookworker.
An intregal part of Grahams life and one he especially enjoyed was feeding and watching the many species of birds that inhabited his backyard. He made sure the bird feeders were always full for his fine feathered friends and he could identify most of them. Watching the birds was his entertaintment.
Graham has made many changes and improvements to their beloved home on Blairs Lake and it is the place he most wanted to be. In the last few weeks he could be found setting in his favorite chair looking out over the garden and the lake beyond.
Nothing will be the same without him and Graham will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Young); son Timothy Smith; daughter Loretta Jane Smith, step daughter Kimberly Davison; brother Gordon (Marion) Smith; sister Mary (Gerald) Trenholm; Grandson Matthew Smith, step grandchildren Justin and Chelsea Davison and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Aubrey of South Athol, N.S.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street in Amherst, N.S. on Friday, June 18th at 2:00 p.m. with Pam Bowman and Rev. Marion Lloy officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.
