John Joseph (Jack) Murphy of 132 St. James Street West was born on March 20th, 1921 and died on June 19th, 2010. Jack was the son of the late Mary Elizabeth (McCormick) and John Edward Murphy, predeceased by his wife Bernadette (Pitts) in 2008. Jack retired from Canada Customs in 1983, and was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2, and honorary member of the Saint John Naval Veterans Association. He served Overseas during World War II with the First Canadian Infantry Division Signals, in Italy and Northwest Europe. J.J. played on several NB Senior Softball Championship teams most notably, the Dry Dock Royals and the Saint John Main Brace where he was instrumental in having this team inducted into the NB Softball Hall of Fame. Jack is survived by two daughters: Lorraine MacLeod (John) and three children, Michaela, Adam and Noah, Moncton, Francine Artichuk (Kevin) Riverview, their two daughters, Madeline Tadros (Derek), Louise Artichuk-Murphy (Tyler) and son Taeo, and son Michael Murphy (Susan Pratt) Quispamsis. He is also survived by his brother Francis X. Murphy, his wife Claire (Nealis) Saint John, daughter Maria and his sister Patricia McPhee and her children Allan, Norma and Cathy of Boston. Jack had the great fortune to have two steadfast friends in James Reed and Shirley Knox. J.J. was an avid reader who kept up-to-date with current events and was often heard to 'proclaim', " don't get me started". During his seventies, his skilled craftsmanship was evident in the design and building of his beloved Camp including all furnishing. The camp and all its many projects became the center of his life and family.
Resting at Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home (634-1701), 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John West. Visiting at Castle Fallsview on Tuesday June 22nd from 2 until 9 pm. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Wednesday June 23rd, at 12 noon. The RCL will hold a Tribute to a Veteran Service on Tuesday at 7 pm.
